The Fine Structure of Hyaline Cartilage and Elastic Cartilage of Growing Rat

Abstract
The fine structure of hyaline and elastic cartilage from the distal femur, trachea and ear of growing rats were studied by electron microscopy.
In the zone of proliferation of epiphyseal plate and articular cartilage, the flattened chondrocyte contained extensive endoplasmic reticulum, well developed Golgi complex - and different types of vacuoles. The chondrocytes in tracheal cartilage showed large nuclei, loosely arranged endoplasmic reticulum, large Golgi complex, small mitochondria, glycogen and vacuoles.
In the zone of provisional calcification of articular cartilage and epiphyseal plate, the hypertrophic chondrocytes contained mainly rough endoplasmic reticulum, free ribosomes and glycogen.
The most characteristic features of elastic castle were large central lipid, a few small mitochondria, fine fibrils and relatively few elements of the endoplasmic reticulum. The matrix of elastic cartilage was scant and contained only a few fine fibrils.
